Wouldn't simply checking whether car of the binding clause is a pair or 
a symbol do the trick? AFAIR only simple symbols were allowed in R5RS.

This would make multiple values more idiomatic and would be probably a 
good thing to do considering the new direction given for PLT 4.0.
