[CS241] English Grammar and bizarre parsing

Was I the only one taught in grammar school that English does not have
infinitive, perfect, or progressive tenses; that these are in fact
verbal-nouns and verbal-adjectives? It seems to me gerunds and
participles should not be parsed as verbs at all.
