Message-ID: <48A6F82A.8020802@arrl.net> Hey Gang, We're still looking for at least 10 more operators for the Cranberry Triathlon next Sunday. A few people have mentioned they are interested, but if you plan to go, please let me know ASAP (even if we have spoken before - I didn't keep a list...). Dave (W2DAN) and I are hauling the HAMCOW on site Saturday evening after we return from Boxboro, and plan to stay overnight and be ready to roll first thing in the morning. I have room for a few more folks to stay over night. Cranberry Country Triathlon Date: Sunday, August 24, 2008 Time: 7AM to Noon Location: Ted Williams Camp (Loon Pond), Lakeville, MA. http://www.cranberrycountrytri.com/ DIRECTIONS: From Fall River * Get onto Rt. 24 North and take Exit 12A Rt. 140 South towards Lakeville (Galleria Mall Exit) * Follow Rt. 140 South for 3.0 Miles to Exit 10, Rt. 79 North * Turn Left at Myricks St. / Rt. 79 and follow for 1.9 Miles. * Turn a slight right into Precinct St. (Fork in the road) and the triathlon will be 1.4 miles on your left. If you hit the intersection of Rt.18/Rt.105, you went too far! Communications will be held on the Fairhaven 145.490 repeater (- offset PL 67.0), and on 2 Meter simplex. Bring an HT, spare battery, gain antenna, or mobile rig. Between the repeater and simplex to the HAMCOW, we'll hear you! Thanks! Please have them e-mail me with the details or I will re-post. Thanks es 73, Paul KE1LI KE1LI@ARRL.NET -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thanks The ham radio familiarization classes will be offered at the Lincoln Public Library from about 5:30 to 7:45PM on three consecutive Wednesdays; September 3, 10 and 17. The library is next to Lincoln High School on Washington Highway, Rt 116. The classes are especially designed to fill the needs of new hams who have not come from technical backgrounds. They will be geared to filling the gaps in information that our newer hams need because of their inexperience and to try to answer questions and explain issues they have from listening to older and more experienced hams. The class will also address common errors made by new Amateurs, helping them to feel more comfortable fitting in. All are welcome including non licensed "hams to be". The classes were designed with the new or inexperienced Amateur in mind, so those folks are especially invited. A great deal of material will be covered but much of it not to any great depth. If requested, the instructor will provide a source for further reference material to study outside the class. There is no pre-registration required but we like to know who is coming, so please e-mail Chrissy at kb1mng@yahoo.com who is keeping track of our class members. The instructor will be Bob Beaudet, W1YRC. Bob holds an Extra class license, member of DXCC, A-1 Operator Club and New England rep to the DX Advisory Committee. Bob has been an active ham for more than 55 years and should not get stuck for an answer to any of your questions. He is the RI ARRL Section Manager, currently serving his fourth consecutive term, is presently an active member of four Amateur radio clubs and serves on various Volunteer Exam teams. Once more, these classes are designed for beginning hams who wish to learn the basics about our great hobby. This is not a traditional theory course. Topics will be discussed only to the level needed for basic understanding and not any further. The outline for the course is as follows: Antenna dipole, trap dipole, folded dipole, half wave formula 468/Fmhz = length in feet advantages/disadvantages of one type over another importance of height and being clear of obstructions (trees, buildings, etc) Yagi design (2,3,4 element) advantages/disadvantages cubical quad advantages/disadvantages ground plane 1/4 wave, # radials, need of radials or other suitable ground screen vertical advantages/disadvantages importance of a ground system; difference between an electrical system ground and an RF ground. radials... how many is enough. Windom antenna Balun.... what is and why needed antenna tuner....what is and why/when needed Bands HF 160-10 Propagation effects of solar ionization of F2, F3, F4 layers VHF 50, 144 MHz effects of thermal ducting and sometimes propagation similar to HF UHF, EME requirements Transmitting modes SSB, CW, AM, FM, RTTY, PSK31, packet, APRS, digital voice, data, SSTV, satellites. Purposes of each, advantages/disadvantages. Power How much is required to be effective? Which mode is more effective for a given level of power? double the power = 3 db, what is a decibel, 6db = 1 S unit, what is an S unit? double the received signal requires about four/five times power increase at the transmitter, depending on how accurately the signal level is measured.
